The entrepreneur "gene" is a lie

"You either have it or you don't."

You've heard this before.

They're talking about the mystical "entrepreneur gene."

The idea that some people are just born to build businesses while others are destined to clock in for the rest of their lives.

It's complete horseshit.

And I'm living proof.

Growing up, there were zero signs that I'd ever run anything bigger than a lemonade stand.

Actually, I never even had a lemonade stand.

I didn't sell candy bars at school or flip Pokemon cards for profit.

I graduated high school with a 2.2 GPA.

My biggest accomplishment was probably getting to master prestige on Black Ops 2.

When I told my parents I was dropping out to start a business, they looked at me like I'd just announced I was joining the circus.

Their first thought wasn't "Oh, I always knew Grant had it in him!"

Their first thought was more like "How did this autistic boy even learn the word entrepreneur, and how is he going to pull this off with literally no skills?"

Fair question, honestly.

I had everything stacked against me.

No network. No money. No clue what I was doing.

While other kids were apparently born with some magical business DNA, I was born with the ability to eat an entire case of Popeyes biscuits without water.

Different skill set.

But here's what I figured out...

You don't need the gene.

You need the stubbornness.

Yeah, it was ridiculously hard. Still is some days.

I was competing against people who actually knew what they were doing while I was over here Googling "how to start a business.”

But I willed this shit into existence.

Not because I was special.

Not because I had some innate talent.

Because I refused to accept that my bank account balance would always look like a phone number from the 1940s.

I knew I had a mountain of stuff to learn, so I learned it.

I knew I was behind, so I worked longer.

I knew I was competing with people who had advantages I didn't, so I got creative.

The "entrepreneur gene" is just an excuse people use to avoid the discomfort of figuring shit out.

It's easier to believe that successful people were just born different than to admit you could do it too if you were willing to get uncomfortable for a few years.

Here's the truth: Anyone can become that person.

You might not have been the kid selling friendship bracelets in middle school, but if you've got the determination to figure things out when you have no idea what you're doing...

If you're stubborn enough to keep going when everyone thinks you're crazy...

If you're willing to be bad at something before you're good at it...

You'll make it.

The only gene that matters is the "I refuse to give up" gene.

And last I checked, that one's not hereditary.

It's a choice.

Either way, stop waiting for permission from your DNA.
